The old saying of ask and you shall receive is very fitting in this. If you are attending a convention, you should find out all you can about how the convention is run. A lot of conventions have discussion broads; it’s just a matter of finding them. Check out the convention website and look for a link and if that fails do a search for it.
There read all you can about what people experiences were/are with that convention. If you are going to a convention just to see a certain celeb/artiest you may be able to find a fan broad that can give you a great deal of information. Once your then ASK QUESTIONS! Most people in fandom are always willing to help out newbies (newbie: someone who is new to fandom/conventions). And you might get more info on fan sites (about certain celeb/artists) then you get from the convention itself.
If you’re looking for conventions here are some websites that might help (please note this is not a complete list, only a few I could find):
www.scificonventions.com
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_science_fiction_conventions
http://www.creationent.com/
http://www.wizardworld.com/
Some of the largest Conventions in North America:
Comic Con (approx 125,000 attendees)
http://www.comic-con.org/
Dragon Con (approx 75,000 attendees)
http://www.dragoncon.org/
FanExpo (approx 50,000 attendees)

Now there are a great many more conventions, that I have not listed, this is just to give people an idea and to help them start there searches.
